He graduated from Seminole County High School in Donalsonville, Georgia and Albany Technical College, Albany, Georgia with a degree in computer programming. Joe received a call to ministry. He then attended Nazarene Bible College, Colorado Springs, Colorado and graduated from Trevecca Nazarene College, Nashville, Tennessee with a BA in Ministry. He devoted himself to helping meet the needs of people and their families going through the end of life stages.

Joe met Karen Marie Applebee December 10, 1976. They married February 26, 1977 in Auburn, New York. Son, Bryan Joel was born in May of 1980 just in time to attend his dad's graduation from Trevecca,
