Corrine was born on March 26, 1933, in Elm, Missouri, to Thomas “Dutch” Hubert and Minnie Alice (Nay) McKay. She grew up in the Odessa area, attending Hughes School for first and second grades and Greenton School from third through eighth grade. She later graduated with the Odessa High School Class of 1950, where she was a member of the Honor Society.
From an early age, Corrine learned the value of hard work beginning at Minnie's Café in Odessa, fittingly named after her mother, where she would earn just $1 an hour. Among the lifelong friendships that would only begin to blossom there, it would be her speed, smile, and remarkable work ethic that earned her the nickname of “Lightning,” the name she’d be remembered most for and one that would gracefully morph into more of a theme than anything else for the remainder of her life. What could be more appropriate for someone whose style was never sitting idle?
On January 9, 1950, Corrine was united in marriage to Donreath Marcellus Fisher, Jr., in Odessa. Together, they welcomed three children, Larry Dale, Ronnie McKay, and Donna Rae, and built a life centered around the love of their family and the community they called home. Corrine and Donreath shared 37 years of marriage before his death on August 9, 1987.
A longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Odessa, Corrine’s faith and church family were a cornerstone of her life. She treasured the simple pleasures that made life special, whether it was exchanging stories and jokes with her friend’s during their hotly anticipated but ever so regular weeknight game of cards; creating memories on cross-country bus trips; or reliving for weeks whatever endearingly themed celebrations she’d have most recently enjoyed at Renee’s, they were all reminders of how much she appreciated good company, friendship, and any opportunity to have fun.
While we will mourn the seat that will now forever remain empty at the dining-room table she so often kept filled with thoughtfully prepared meals, the touch of her remarkably soft hands most frequently found reaching for a hug or the nearest coffee mug, her fierce independence, and her joy-filled laughter that made everything feel whole, it’s her selfless dedication to her children, her grandchildren, and the friends she held dear we will miss most. Corrine spent more than twenty-five combined years at Joe and Frankie Parshall’s local United Super, which would later become Piggly Wiggly followed by IGA, and there is no doubt the people she came to love along the way are all feeling this similar absence. Whether you looked for her warm and familiar face in the butcher department or behind that grocery store checkout, know there was no place she’d rather have been than among those grocery store aisles, smiling back at you, and helping in all the ways she knew how, even up until her passing.
It was her tireless spirit, independence, and the love she cultivated among her family and friends that leaves the most lasting impression. From her early days at Minnie's Café to the many years she spent raising her family, she lived a life full of meaning and a life that will be missed by those so fortunate enough to have been touched by her grace. Though she is already deeply missed, we find comfort in the memories she created and in knowing the never-ending love she leaves behind will be woven into the fabric of the many generations to follow.
Corrine is survived by her two sons, Larry Dale Fisher and Ronald McKay Fisher (Rita) of Odessa; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Maun of Odessa, and Ruth Braxdale of California; five grandchildren, Aaron Fisher and Travis Fisher of Blue Springs, Nathan Fisher (Rachel Becktame) and Jacob Fisher of Odessa, and Nichol Gialde (Kenny Gassen) of Bates City; niece, Bev Kuhlmann (Danny) of Odessa; nephew, Tommy Simmons (Bonita) of Illinois; eleven great-grandchildren, Jade Fisher of Odessa, Trista Fisher of Colorado, Aidonn and Jackson Fisher of Blue Springs, Kalie Fisher (Nick Cook) of Lee’s Summit, Gracie Fisher of Odessa, Tyler Freeman of Odessa, Nicholas Trigg of Higginsville, Madalyn Miller (Stephen Welch) of Higginsville, Trae Miller and Jackson Miller of Independence; two great-great-grandchildren, Reese Fisher and Lily Fisher of Odessa, Kensley Miller of Independence, Parker Miller of Independence, as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Donreath, Corrine was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Bays; daughter-in-law, Jill Fisher; son-in-law, William Bays; granddaughter, Maegan Bays; grandson-in-law, Dr. Steve Gialde; sisters, Dorothy Boyer and Rose Mary McKay; brother, William “Billy” McKay; and three nephews, Jerry Simmons, Dave Simmons, and Gary Maun.
