Mary "Carmen" (James) Harwood

Mary “Carmen” (James) Harwood, 82, of Blue Springs, Missouri, formerly of Odessa, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2021 at St. Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit, MO.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 S. 2nd Street, Odessa, MO, 64076, 816-633-5524. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 9, 2021 at the First Christian Church, 224 W Dryden St, Odessa, MO, 64076. Masks are required at the visitation and funeral. (For attendees traveling from outside of Odessa, Hwy 131 south of Odessa is currently closed). Burial will follow at the Greenton Cemetery in Odessa, MO. Carmen was born on April 28, 1938, in Fort Scott, KS. Her parents were Woodford and Mary (Williams) James. After graduating from Higginsville High School in 1956 she married Tom Lybarger in 1957. Together they had three children. Following Tom’s death in 1970, Carmen received her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from CMSU in Warrensburg, MO. Carmen taught 3rd grade at McQuerry Elementary in Odessa for over 20 years during which time she also received her Master’s degree. On September 1, 1972 she married Patrick Sidney Harwood in Odessa, MO. Carmen was a member of the First Christian Church of Odessa and the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She enjoyed church and community involvement and helping others. She loved spending time with her many friends and loving family. Her greatest joy was the time she shared with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved them dearly and they love her back.
Survivors include four daughters, Dianne Jones of Blue Springs, MO, Karen Kaylor of Blue Springs, MO, Naomi Hastings and husband, Dan of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Valerie Caye and husband, Denis of Lee’s Summit, MO; two sisters, Lois Carol Wilson and husband, Skip of Springfield, MO, Janet Roncelli and husband, Joe of Lexington, MO; a brother, Don James and wife, Sharon of Odessa, MO; seven grandchildren, Ashley Jones, Kara Paulding and husband, Rickey, Leigh Kaylor, Tres Reiss and wife, Cami, Tyler Reiss and wife, Jodi, Adrien Caye and wife, Keale, and Stephan Caye and wife, Sarah; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, who were dear to her heart.
Carmen was preceded in death by husbands; Tom Lybarger, and Pat Harwood, two sons, Tommy Lybarger and Ben Harwood; a daughter, Mary Deni Harwood in infancy; and a sister, Katherine Suse.
